More Foliage Pics

Here are some more foliage pics I took on a hike up Blue Job. It is not far from here and is a quick and easy hike. It was just me and Boomer while the kids were in school and Dom was at work. We didn't even meet anyone else until we were on our way down. It was a beautiful morning. In the first picture Boomer is laying in water though you can't really see it because of all the leaves. Any body of water and Boomer will get and try to swim, not matter how shallow!

Fall Foliage part 1

Most of these are from our recent and probably last cruise on the lake this season. The little waterfall is the river out back that has run pretty strong all summer due to all the rain. I guess we have the rain to thank for the bright colors. The first one is the woods behind the house.

Distractions

Been a little distracted this week with the long weekend, peak foliage(Will share those pics soon.) and just normal day to day stuff. My biggest distracton lately has been the knifty knitter. After making several hats I started getting ideas about some Halloween stuff I could make so I've been doing that. The stuff just knits up so quick that I have been making something new almost on a daily basis. It's cool cause I just bring it in the car while I am waiting to pick up the girls from school or in the evenings while I watch TV or radomly during the day when I should be doing laundry and cleaning bathrooms.
Anyway, thought I'd share some of my recent creations. I am thinking of opening an etsy shop to help support my new knitting addiction. And well if anyone needs a hat you know who to ask!

Bobby the spider is the most popular Halloween decoration with the girls, so much so that they made him an honorary Webkinz. I also need to make another one because they are fighting over him!

Crackin' up

Sometimes I find myself doing something that the girls have asked me to do and I agree(usually it's before that first cup of coffee kicks in) and then I ask myself,
"Why am I doing this?"
Like this morning at 7:00 am I found myself trying to crack open an acorn for Kenzie's webkinz chipmunk because he was hungry...He's getting ready to hibernate you know.
Those suckers are kinda slippery and it took me several attempts to do it. Now I was using a nutcracker that I stole, I mean borrowed, from my parents house and it is quite possibly older than I am. Not sure if it might have been easier with a modern day nutcracker.(kidding mom) Actually maybe it's for cracking open lobsters..does it make a difference??
Anyway as I finally cracked open the acorn and realized how meaty they are inside I got to wondering why people don't eat acorns.

No, I didn't try it but it prompted me to want to find out why. So I looked in my handy, dandy
Encyclopedia of Country Living to see if it had acorns in it and I learned a few things that I shared with the girls.
Acorns are bitter due to the fact that they contain tannin. Tannin is used in tanning hides into leather. Some varieties of acorns contain more tannin than others and you can leach the tannin out to make the acorns taste better. Basically it's a lot of work for a little return.
Also pigs and chickens enjoy eating acorns too.
So there's everything you never wanted to know about acorns.

And you may be snickering at that fact that I own a book called The Encyclopedia of Country Living but this is seriously one of my favorite books and it is full of information about living a more self sufficient life and well, with the state of the economy right now, who doesn't want to be a little more self sufficient?

In case you were wondering Chubby the chipmunk was very thankful for his acorn breakfast.

That Darn Cat!

I don't let the cat on the table or counters. But apparently she didn't get that memo.
Here she is enjoying her morning cup of coffee. She also didn't get the memo about walking across the laptop and "accidentally" deleting everything in my email inbox just so I would pay attention to her. It's a good thing she's cute!

Here we go Bruins!

On Saturday we made the trek down to Boston to see a preseason Bruins game. It has been several years since Dom and I have been. It was Becca's second game and Mackenzie's first.

Becca enjoyed it, Kenzie not so much. After the first period Kenzie was ready to go while the rest of us were not. We did end up leaving halfway through the third period much to Dom's dismay but the Bruins ended up losing 3-1 so we didn't miss much. Even though they lost Dom and I are all psyched up for Hockey season to officially begin this week!
